August Newsletter 2021

Vincent Van Gogh: Rowing Boats on the Banks of the Oise, 1890, collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts

Dear Friends & Readers,

With several weeks of summer ahead, we hope you’ll find time for a great getaway in Michigan, perhaps with a few books to read, share, and enjoy.

On Wednesday, August 18th at 6:30 PM, we’ll be hosting an online Summer Family Reading group for Tove Jansson’s fantasy adventure: Finn Family Moomintroll, one of the best introductions to the world of Moominland.

This coming Sunday, August 15, from 12-5 PM we will be hosting our 39th Anniversary Party. There will be authors, cake, music, an organic food sale with native plants from Carosello Farms, a seed swap and plant exchange, and plenty of good books on sale! We will have indoor limits with masks required.

We have another fine selection of small press books and graphic novels reviewed by Tom Bowden in his column: i arrogantly recommend….

Our books in translation group  will be discussing Count Luna by Alexander Lernet-Holenia on August 25.

Happy summer & happy reading!

~Cary, Colleen and the Book Beat staff
