Dear Friends and Readers,
August is moving along, and there’s plenty happening at Book Beat over the next few weeks—from new books and author events to reading groups, and a little digging around in the backroom.
We have several events coming up, including a conversation with Beverly Bantam about the remarkable life of Maxine Powell, a rare Detroit appearance by Molly Crabapple, and a presentation by Rachael Renae on creativity and play. The Sub Rosa reading group is discussing Janet Frame’s classic Owls Do Cry, and our other reading group is taking on Ithell Colquhoun’s strange and wonderful novel The Goose of Hermogenes.
And speaking of strange and wonderful things: we’ve been spending some time looking through the photography material in the Book Beat backroom. Our new post on Karl Blossfeldt is the first of what we hope will be an occasional look at some of the photographs, books, and other things that have been hiding in plain sight here.
We’re also pleased to share Nancy J. Rodwan’s review of The Heart Shaped Tin by Bee Wilson coming in paperback this November from Tin House.
Plus, Tom Bowden has given us another reason to go looking for books we might otherwise miss, with the 76th installment of his small-press reviews.
We’ve decided to make a name change to our monthly newsletter and call it the Book Beat Journal. It will remain a site that features local author events and happenings at Book Beat, but we also want to share one or two small features in each issue exploring the arts. Thank you for reading and your continued support.
Kind regards,
~Cary, Colleen and the Book Beat staff
