Dear Friends and Booklovers,

We’re sorry to be getting our event schedule out late and were unable to post individual event pages for some of the new events listed. We’ve had staff scheduling problems and hopefully the problem has now been resolved.

The fall season is shaping up to be a book extravaganza! Many enticing releases in the arts, photography, childrens and in quality literature have been quickly filling our shelves. Stop by and explore new titles during our store hours: Monday-Saturday 10 am- 6 pm and Sunday Noon- 5 pm.

We’d like to give thanks to our community of readers, authors, musicians, vendors, and artists, who came out to help us celebrate Book Beat’s 40th anniversary. It was kicks!

Among the highlights this month and early next; Josh Malerman’s mix of theater and basketball for his book launch of DAPHNE; our in-store signing with author Barbara Henning and editor Sally Howell, docomomo’s author event at the Southfield library; new reviews by Tom Bowden in i arrogantly recommend; and this Sunday’s event with Under the Radar’s Tom Daldin. Book Beat’s online reading group selection for September is Gustave Flaubert’s classic Three Tales.

Sunday: 9/18 from 12:30-2 PM: Tom Daldin and Jim Edelman creators of Under the Radar

Tom Daldin, the Emmy award-winning producer, actor and writer, and Jim Edelman, will read and autograph their newest Under The Radar book and backlist here in our store from 12:30- 2 pm. Book Beat is located at 26010 Greenfield Road, Oak Park MI. The event begins at 12:30pm.


Saturday, 9/17 at 3 PM, Read in the Park with Amy Young

The fourth annual Read in the Park, hosted by the Baldwin Public Library, will feature Amy Young, the author and illustrator of the Unicorn Named Sparkle series. Located in Beverly Park at 18801 Beverly Road, the event begins at 1:00 pm, with Amy Young going on at 3:00 pm. Also features Detroit native Dr. Ed Sarkis Balian and his biography of Bob Seger. Tuesday, 9/20 Josh Malerman’s Book launch: Daphne

New York Times bestselling author and Michigan native Josh Malerman, the author of Bird Box, will debut his new novel, Daphne, on Tuesday, September 20th, when basketball meets theater at University High School in Lathrup Village. Located at 19301 W. 12 Mile Road.

Thursday, October, 6: docomomo presents: Meet You at the Fountain Signing

docomomo, the Southfield Public Library, and Book Beat, invite you to explore the history and future of shopping malls with a focus on Southfield’s iconic Northland Center. The event features Alexandra Lange, author of the newly-released book Meet Me By The Fountain: An Inside History of the Mall. The Southfield library is located at 26300 Evergreen Road in Southfield. Friday, October 7 at 7 PM: Stephen Mack Jones & Neal Rubin at Farmington Hills Special Services

Michigan notable author Stephen Mck Jones, the creator of the August Snow series, will discuss his works and process with the award-winning Detroit Free Press columnist Neal Rubin. The event starts at 7:00pm. Tickets are required and available here.


Saturday, October 8 2:30 pm: Author Anita Fitch-Pazner at the Royal Oak Public Library

Join Anita Fitch-Pazner, author of The Topsy-Turvy Bus, will discuss her book, the real life bus, and topics including composting, organic gardening, and alternative energy. The event begins at 2:30pm on Sunday, October 8th. Admission is free but registration is required. Register here.


Sunday, October 8, 2 pm: Poet Donald S. Murray at the Scottish Centre

Novelist and poet Donald S. Murray will give a live talk at the Kilgour Scottish Center on Sunday, October 8th. The address is 2363 Rochester Road in Troy, and the talk will begin at 2:00pm. The author will discuss his books As The Women Lay Dreaming and In A Veil of Mist. RSVP required. More info on this signing will be coming soon.


Sunday, October 9, 3 pm at Book Beat: Barbara Henning author of Ferne, and a presentation of Hadha Baladuna, a new anthology of Arab Detroit with editor Sally Howell

Author and poet Barbara Henning will present her literary memoir packed with photos and historical documents all based in Detroit and editor Sally Howell will present a new anthology on Arab Detroit.
