Dear Readers,

Welcome to the July edition of the Book Beat newsletter!

In addition to upcoming events, this month’s newsletter features many new additions to the Book Beat Gallery, including rare books, signed editions, and a new artist book by Jimbo Easter and Cary Loren called Wig Scratch.

July 20 marks the 8th Annual Detroit Bookfest at Eastern Market in Detroit. Book Beat, along with many other vendors, will be there from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Shed #5. It’s Michigan’s biggest and best book festival, so be sure to stop by! An interactive vendor map, as well as more information, can be found at the Detroit Bookfest website.

We will also be serving as a vendor for the DBF x DPL live author talkes, featuring Mark Crilley, Dr. Ricky Ross, Curtis Chin, The AstroTwins, and more! The live talks & presentations will be held inside the Detroit Public Library on Friday, July 18th, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. You can also read more about Bookfest on our website here.

The Oak Park Garden Tour is July 27 from 1-5 p.m. This radically inclusive event is free, open to the public, and kid-friendly. With 30+ participating gardens in 2025. Book Beat will have a display of gardening books and host a living plant and seed swap table up from 1-5 PM. If you’d like to participate in the plant or seed swap please keep plants in paper cups with water and label and date envelopes for seed identification.

Read small press book reviews, author interviews, and indie recommendations from our resident bibliophile Tom Bowden in his column i arrogantly recommend… This month’s edition features a slew of reviews from presses like Open Letter, Deep Velum, and 50 Watts Books, among others, including two Q&A’s with Claudia Zoe Bedrick of Unruly Books and author R.G. Vasicek.

i arrogantly recommend… #59 by Tom Bowden

Wishing everyone a happy healthy summer! Stay cool!
Happy reading!

— Cary, Colleen, and the Book Beat staff

I say take a trip To old Bob-Lo
Where the boys and girls
Delight to go.
Then home, sweet home,
From old Bob-Lo, In the evening
When the sun is low.
It’s a beautiful ride
By the light of the moon,
Dancing home to a rag-time tune.

—Frank Stodgell, “Bob-Lo Song,” 1913
