Holiday Cheers: a December Newsletter

Dear Friends and Book Lovers,

Thank you for your continued support in our fortieth year.

Our newsletter features a double column of small press reviews by Tom Bowden, an announcement for our eighth year of fundraising (we call it ‘bookraising’) for the Gesu School Library of Detroit, and a holiday gift guide featuring catalogs from our affiliate page on Bookshop.org.

We’d like to to remind Metro Detroit that the Kresge Fellowship Awards in the Literary and Visual Arts has a January 19, 2023 deadline.20 Artist Fellowships of $25,000 and 10 Gilda Awards of $5000 for emerging artists will be awarded. Please share this with writers and artists you may know.

Sadly, we’d like to report the passing of our good friend George Barry who died at home last Saturday, November 26. George was a father, filmmaker, film historian, and a seller of antiquarian books who worked out of his home in Royal Oak for many years and at a storefront bookshop on Orchard Lake and 14 mile in West Bloomfield. The African proverb says, “When an old man dies, a library burns to the ground.” George had an abundance of specialized knowledge and was a living library. We remember him for his kindness, as a custodian of books and book knowledge, and a generous supplier to many collectors and libraries in the USA and around the world.

We hope you can find time to peruse the current crop of fall books filling our shelves. Our hours and contact info are noted below.

We wish you a beautiful and blessed holiday season and continued good readings.

Peace, Love and Good Health,

~Cary, Colleen and the Book Beat staff

The rooms were very still while the pages were softly turned and the winter sunshine crept in to touch the bright heads and serious faces with a Christmas greeting.
