Staying in touch with books & us

Woman Reading by Berthe Morisot, 1873

Dear Friends and Readers,

THANK YOU for your patience and support!

During the past few weeks we’ve removed our carpeting and are in the midst of staining and sealing the concrete floor. The work is going a bit slower than we thought (working only in the evenings) and has unfortunately postponed our reopening this week.

We’ve also brought in some new bookshelves and are working on a section devoted to quality bargain books and literary remainders. If you’re not already  receiving our bi-monthly newsletter, please subscribe.  You’ll receive store updates, book news, reading recommendations, special sales and more at: Book Beat Homepage

Night shift workers Brett and Kevin rip-it-up in the children’s section.

Direct Ordering

Direct sales benefit the shop immediately and are appreciated. Our current hours are: Mon.-Sat. 10 AM – 5 PM, Sun. 12-5 PM.

TO ORDER CALL (248) 968-1190, or email us at: BookBeatOrders@gmail.com CURBSIDE PICKUP & SPECIAL ORDERS MAILED for $3 per box within the USA continues. Have you joined our Send a Friend a book! campaign. It’s Fast! (snail mail) and Cheap! (still only $3) any size order delivered. Mail order bookselling and contactless service are part of “the new normal” and we see it as a good thing that promotes safety and reading.

Looking for a good book recommendation? Give us a call. We are here to help.

Ordering Online at Bookshop.org

If you’d like to browse from home (or from anywhere), our online bookshop is at: http://Bookshop.org/shop/Bookbeat/ Most Bookshop books in our catalogs are stocked at our physical store. If they turn up as out-of-stock online, please try the bookstore: they may be available on our shelves.

At the top of the page is a new book search button for Book Shop. Bookshop is simple and easy to use. The data base is connected to Ingram Books, a distributor used by almost every indie bookstore. Andy Hunter, who began Bookshop, saw a need for indie bookstores to compete online with Amazon. In a recent New York Times article Hunter said, “If it’s sticky and it lasts beyond this Covid crisis, it’s going to really help bookstores thrive.”

Bookshop has been a lifeline for us, and we believe it will get better. Check it out if you haven’t already. We’ve added 134 catalogs containing thousands of books, and are growing it weekly. Our goal is to have Bookshop/Bookbeat represent our in-store stock as close as possible. If you’re a blogger, please use Bookshop instead of Amazon. Thank you.

For Audiobooks

For Audio Book fans, we have become an affiliate of LIBRO.FM & we’ve heard that the service, price and selection is similar to audible and other audio book services.

Rare and Out of Print Books

For scarce out-of-print books, collectible art and children’s books, please visit our Biblio.com shop. Biblio is owned and operated by indie bookstores to help indie bookstores. We update our inventory on Biblio several times a week and ship orders within 24 hours.

Find us on Face Book, Instagram and Twitter

We update our Facebook page usually daily with book news, and reviews of interest: Facebook.com/bookbeat and at Instagram, posts are similar to Facebook, but without links. At Book Beat’s Twitter Page we share links to book news and shop events.

What’s in this month’s Newsletter:

Poet and author Helen Frost has kindly shared some of her family’s favorite books shared by reading aloud. Tara Jay, (a former manager at Book Beat) wrote an essay on several notable LGBTQ books in ‘Queer Mappings‘ for Pride Month. A new installment of literary book reviews featuring art and children’s books by Tom Bowden is here, along with an update of Detroit I Do Mind Dying, from an author signing held at Book Beat ten years ago.

Please pass along our newsletter to friends who might be interested in books or reading. Signing up for the newsletter is easy at: Book Beat Homepage. We are trying to keep mailings to a twice-a-month schedule during the pandemic. Thank you for your continued patronage. We’re sincerely grateful.

Stay Safe, Healthy and Reading,

Love,

Cary, Colleen and the staff at Book Beat
