A Pomegranate Tree, L’Shana Tova, on the Birthday of the World

09/07/25
Dear Friends and Readers,

September is a month of change. Major new titles for the fall season are arriving weekly and we invite you to stop by to check them out. Make browsing in a bookstore part of your mental health getaway. We aim to make our bookstore a safe and positive space to recharge and reflect on life’s meaning. There is a great quote in E. B. White’s The Once and Future King: “The best thing for being sad,” replied Merlin, “is to learn something. That’s the only thing that never fails.” Here are a few new releases for September we look forward to:

From Jill Lepore, the best-selling author of These Truths comes We the People, a stunning new history of the U.S. Constitution, for a troubling new era.

In The Wilderness, her long-awaited sophomore novel after the National Book Award finalist The Turner House, Angela Flournoy explores the friendship of five women across 25 years, from young adulthood to midlife.

The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny is Kiran Desai’s first novel since winning the Booker Prize for 2006’s The Inheritance of Loss, Desai offers a sweeping family saga and love story, featuring aspiring novelist Sonia and struggling journalist Sunny as they try to find happiness together. The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny was also nominated on the long-list for this year’s Booker Prize.

In Gray Dawn, a thrilling mystery from “master of craft and narrative” Walter Mosley (National Book Foundation), Detective Easy Rawlins has settled into the happy rhythm of his new life when a dark siren from his past returns and threatens to destroy the peace he’s fought for.

The Life Impossible (new in paperback) by Matt Haig is the follow up to his mega-bestseller The Midnight Library. Filled with wonder and wild adventure, this is a story of hope and the life-changing power of a new beginning.

On September 21, Book Beat is hosting a signing with Matt Faulkner and Kristine Remenar, and on October 5, we’re at the Detroit Public Library with acclaimed thriller writer Lisa Unger. See below for more details.

Our favorite local horror aficionado Josh Malerman releases a guide to the craft of writing horror and courting love in Watching Evil Dead: Unearthing the Radiant Artist Within where Malerman reveals his secrets to writing wildly original and deeply heartfelt fiction. Preorder a signed copy now from our backroom gallery. We are working on a date in October TBA for Josh and Jonathon Janz to join forces in a presentation of their new work.

Read new small press book reviews, author interviews, and indie recommendations from our resident bibliophile Tom Bowden found in his column i arrogantly recommend… This month, Tom has provided two columns: #62 (which features some Book Beat staff favorites) and #63 (which features more small press works, as well as a special review of the latest from Hanuman Editions).

Our reading groups will be exploring two extraordinary works—The Lost Steps by Alejo Carpentier and The Stone Door by Leonora Carrington. Come read, think, and celebrate the turning of the season with us.

We would also like to wish our Jewish friends and family a happy and sweet Rosh Hashanah for the Jewish New Year, a reminder of renewal, reflection, and the chance to begin again. Happy reading!
