Art Shay: Chicago Accent (signed copy)
“Art Shay’s photography shakes you up, sets you down gently, pats you on the head, and then kicks you in the ass.” —Roger Ebert
Capture the raw, poetic reality of mid-century Chicago through the lens of legendary photojournalist Art Shay (1922-2018). Published in 2007 by the Stephen Daiter Gallery to accompany a landmark retrospective exhibition, this rare, highly collectible volume offers an unvarnished look at the city’s post-war underclass, street culture, and famous figures. The book comprises 45 high-fidelity black-and-white plates capturing Chicago street life, along with striking portraits of Marlon Brando, Muhammad Ali, Timothy Leary, Robert Crumb, and The Supremes.
Also included are a powerful foreword by acclaimed playwright David Mamet, and an exploration of the deep friendship and artistic collaboration between Shay and National Book Award-winning author Nelson Algren.
NOTE: This volume includes the limited edition dustjacket, but it is unnumbered, and lacks the slipcase, original photo print, and Mamet signature included with the limited edition volume.
