The Observable World by Ray Pettibon (signed)

MoMA describes their copy of The Observable World as a “lithograph printed artist book,” but given Ray Pettibon’s punk associations, we won’t mind if you call it a zine. It features 28 pages of Pettibon’s trademark inky, noir-inflected illustrations, all with enigmatic captions that hint at strange, disturbing stories behind the art. Printed in 1985 by SST Publications, print arm of the SoCal record label (Black Flag, Sonic Youth, et al). This copy is #102 of an edition of 500, and is signed on the cover in pen by the artist. Staple-bound, 8.5 x 5.5 inches (21.5 x 14 cm). Fine- or VG+ (The cover has a crease in the upper right corner.) Scarce! According to primary design archives and auction listings from Wright Auctions and AbeBooks, while the print run for The Observable World was intended to be 500 copies, approximately 400 copies were famously destroyed by the artist due to storage and distribution frustrations[PB10]
