Spare Parts by Charles Henri Ford
Large-format hardcover book of collage art by American Surrealist poet, novelist, editor, filmmaker, and photographer Charles Henri Ford. A one-time member of Gertrude Stein’s ex-pat crowd, and later publisher of the New York-based avant garde magazine View (a haven for Surrealists fleeing Europe during the war), Ford associated himself with Pop artists and filmmakers in the 1960s (“the influence probably flowed both ways,” says Roberta Smith in NYT). Spare Parts comprises several of his “poem posters”—lithographs, collaged together from found text and images and printed in vivid, acid colors. “Earthy, elegant and alternating sexual references with advertising come-ons, the ‘Poem Posters’ were a particularly visual and outrageous form of concrete poetry.” (Roberta Smith, NYT, 1999) Published in Greece in 1966 under the New View imprint.
