Rita Ackermann: Under Pressure from 2006 to 2007
Published by the independent Swiss imprint Nieves on the occasion of Rita Ackermann’s inclusion in the prestigious 2008 Whitney Biennial, Under Pressure from 2006 to 2007 is a highly sought-after, collectible artist book. This uniquely proportioned, oversized volume is filled from front to back with striking full-bleed reproductions of Ackermann’s collage and mixed-media works. Within its pages, she expertly integrates clipped newspaper headlines, fashion advertisements, ballpoint pen sketches, and historical paintings to create modern totems exploring female sexuality, identity, and raw physical presence. As New York Times critic Roberta Smith observed, Ackermann deftly commands both densely clogged and minimalist, spare compositions where women appear alternatively as “victors, victims or silent witnesses.”

Author Biography:
Rita Ackermann (b. 1968) is an influential Hungarian-American painter, multimedia artist, musician, and performer based in New York City. Born in Budapest, she trained at the University of Fine Arts Budapest before relocating to the United States in the early 1990s to study at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. Ackermann first gained widespread critical acclaim in the mid-1990s for her expressive, line-driven paintings depicting “nymphetish” figures that challenged conventional gender depictions. Over the subsequent decades, her versatile practice has evolved through a wide array of styles—ranging from raw text-and-magazine collages to complex, ghostlike abstract oil paintings. Represented globally by major galleries like Hauser & Wirth, Ackermann’s work is held in numerous permanent museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
