Moroccan Journal: Jajouka excerpt (signed)

Moroccan Journal: Jajouka excerpt by Lee Ranaldo and Leah Singer; a small diaristic journal and document of the couple’s 1995 journey to reach Bachir Attar (son of the former leader) and the Master Musicians of Jajouka. A beautiful design, with henna stencil-screened covers in metallic silver, 12 black and white photos, as new on cream paper and cardstock wraps, staple bound, first printing, Ring Tarigh, Rhode Island, 1997. This copy is signed on the title page by Lee Ranaldo.

A fascinating record that brings together an ancient tradition of Sufi musicians discovered from the legendary Tangier trail by Paul Bowles, Brion Gysin and William S. Burroughs in the 1950s and brought to an international audience in 1969 by Brian Jones.

“We jammed out several surprisingly easy improvisations, feeling each other out. Bachir had one pedal—a digital delay — similar to one I often use, and its gentle slapback reminded me of modern African gtr sounds I have heard. Perhaps they sunk in more than I had noted because it seemed my primitive /sophisto gtr and their sophisto/primitive rhythms fit well together, effortlessly.

Brian Jones had found Jajouka through Brion Gysin in the sixties, at a time when everyone else was looking to India for mesmerizing trance rhythms.”
—Lee Ranaldo and Leah Singer, Moroccan Journal
