Throughout his career, he rejected the boundaries between fine art and industrial design, creating everything from massive stone sculptures to iconic furniture.<\/p>\n<p>In 1951, Noguchi visited Gifu, Japan, a town famous for manufacturing traditional paper lanterns and umbrellas. The local industry was struggling, and the town&#8217;s mayor asked Noguchi to help revitalize it. Inspired by the way lanterns illuminated the night fishermen on the Nagara River, Noguchi designed the Akari series. He chose the word &#8220;Akari,&#8221; meaning &#8220;light&#8221; in Japanese, to connote both illumination and weightlessness.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of creating mere light fixtures, Noguchi considered Akari to be &#8220;light sculptures.&#8221; Handcrafted by skilled artisans using traditional Mino washi paper and flexible bamboo ribs, these lamps transform harsh electrical light into the natural warmth of sunlight.
