The highly sought-after, seminal first artist’s book and zine by contemporary art icon Raymond Pettibon. Published in late 1978 by his brother Greg Ginn’s legendary punk label, SST Publications, this saddle-stapled work bridges the gap between underground comic book culture and contemporary fine art. Combining a raw, literary-inflected narrative with full-page ink drawings, Captive Chains<\/em> introduces many of the recurring cultural critiques, ironic text placements, and gritty aesthetics that defined Pettibon’s early career and his contributions to the Southern California punk scene.<\/p>\n

This particular example is signed by Raymond Pettibon<\/strong> in pen along the bottom edge of the front cover. Signed copies of Pettibon books are scarce, this was obtained directly from Pettibon in a trade of zinea with the owner of Book Beat in the early 1980s.<\/p>\n

Condition:<\/strong> Fine copy. The black-and-white illustrated wrappers remain sharp, flat, and well-preserved. There is a small, clean tear in the upper right corner of the front cover, which has been left completely unaltered and has not been taped or repaired. The staples remain firm, and the interior pages are crisp and intact with only minor, natural age-toning consistent with its age and paper stock. [pb6]<\/p>\n
