Ray Hawkins gallery for a West coast exhibition by James Van Der Zee, one of the most famous African-American photographers in the United States, known for his documentation and portraits of Harlem, New York. <\/p>\n<p>James Van Der Zee was a renowned, Harlem-based photographer known for his posed, storied pictures capturing African-American citizenry and celebrity. Born on June 29, 1886, in Lenox, Massachusetts, James Van Der Zee developed a passion for photography as a youth, and opened up his own Harlem studio in 1916. Van Der Zee became known for his detailed imagery of African-American life, and for capturing celebrities such as Florence Mills and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Following hard financial times, Van Der Zee enjoyed a resurge in his career during his later years. He died in 1983 in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Harlem Through James Van Der Zee&#039;s Lens | Historically Black (5\/8)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BYIwRu77fCY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>  This beautiful poster was reproduced by the collotype process &#8211; there is a continuous tone to the sepia tinted image, one of the few nudes ever to be printed by the photographer.  &#8220;Nude by the Fireplace&#8221; is assumed to be Van Der Zee&#8217;s first wife and was taken in the early 1920s. The edition size of this printing was 300 copies, printed by the Black Box Colotype Co., Chicago, IL. .  The edition of the signed posters was 100 copies.
