About Basil Wolverton

Basil Wolverton (1909–1978) was an American cartoonist and illustrator whose highly idiosyncratic, detailed, and preposterously detailed “spaghetti and meatball” style carved out a unique space in comic book history. Best known for his work in early horror comics, his iconic features in Mad magazine, and his legendary “Lena the Hyena” depiction for Al Capp’s Li’l Abner strip, Wolverton’s surreal, grotesque caricatures remain a foundational influence on the underground comix movement and modern lowbrow art culture.
