There was a time when the Detroit Waterfront was home to the fleets of several maritime transportation companies, like the Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Company, the Cleveland and Buffalo Transit Company, the Georgian Bay Lines and the Canada Steamship Lines. The ships of these organizations were large, comfortable, and efficiently carried passengers all over the Great Lakes. In addition, they operated cruises that allowed inhabitants of the states around the Great Lakes an opportunity to experience their region from a new, watery perspective. Explore the fascinating world of steamship travel on the Great Lakes with author and architect Bruce Allen Kopytek – who will tell the story of the companies, their crews, their passengers, and their ships, all of them marvels of the Marine Architect’s art.

Bruce Kopytek has spent a career creating works of architecture that combine thought and creativity to produce buildings that are a credit to their locations and environment. During his forty plus years of experience in the field, he also developed his passion for books and began his commercial writing career in 2011. His first book, entitled Jacobson’s: I Miss it So! won a Michigan Notable Book Award in 2012. Through 2015, four more titles appeared which were likewise published by The History Press/Arcadia Publishing. From that point onward, he began to consider how an author’s work was valued within the traditional Author-Agent-Publisher relationship. Editions BK LLC will publish Hudson’s: Detroit’s World-Famous Department Store, Bruce’s latest work. It is a beautifully produced large-format hardcover book that was written and designed to appeal to those who recall the great Detroit institution with affection.

Born in Hamtramck, Michigan in 1958, Bruce Kopytek received his degrees in Architecture from the University of Detroit but has never really stopped learning and expanding his fields of interest. These include history, travel, art, and book collecting. He is a fan of classic literature and enjoys married life, family, ballroom dancing, and the two crazy cats, Gigi and Mimi that share a home with him and his wife, Carole.
