About This Issue

This rare, early issue of the influential Parisian art, culture, and fashion publication features the “Special New Jersey” theme.  It includes a prominent feature and double-fold cover artwork by Richard Prince. Additional artistic and photographic contributions include works by Dan Graham, Juergen Teller, Terry Richardson, Wolfgang Tillmans, and an appearance by the independent rock band Yo La Tengo.

About Purple Magazine

Founded in Paris in 1992 by Olivier Zahm and Elein Fleiss, Purple began as a reaction against the superficial, highly commercialized fashion media of the 1980s. Blurring the lines between raw counterculture snapshot photography, contemporary fine art, and high fashion, the magazine became a vital launching pad for the “heroin chic” aesthetic and anti-fashion movements of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Vintage issues remain highly collectible archival references for fashion historians.
