Phillipines Boxer: photos by Hideki Sato

“Born in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture in 1953, (Hideki Sato) became a freelancer in the early 1970s. In 1983, he was captivated by the fierce title match between Jackal Maruyama and Hiroyuki Seki, and decided that he had no choice but to take photos. Since then, he has taken many images focusing on the faces of fighting men.” (Made In Wonder website)

Hideki Sato’s Philippines Boxer follows the same format as his previous book, Mex Box (1996) which juxtaposed black-and-white portraits of aspiring Mexican boxers with urban scenes shot in color. This 300+ page book is filled with striking photos of fighters and city life around the boxing scene in the Philippines.
