Lee Friedlander (self portraits, 2000)

2000 collection of 77 black-and-white self portraits by Friedlander, taken between 1993 and 1999 when the photographer was in his late 50s/early 60s. Friedlander has long made himself (sometimes just his shadow) one of the subjects of his “social landscapes.” Here, rather than urban environments, he inserts himself mostly into humble domestic interiors—bedrooms and living rooms—or else outdoor settings, interacting with cacti, gingkos, or other foliage, usually wearing a sleepy-eyed, hangdog expression (unless he’s with his wife or grandkid, when his eyes light up a bit). “At first,” the artist once said, “my presence in my photos was fascinating and disturbing. But as time passed and I was more a part of other ideas in my photos, I was able to add a giggle to those feelings.”
