“Thanks to Kim, I’ve never stopped working on the question of gender.” Meeting transgender cabaret performer Kim Harlow greatly impacted Bettina Rheims’ photography. In 1991, Rheims shot the series of photos of Harlow that accompany this project, in which Harlow began to tell her story. She was unable to finish it; she died of AIDS in 1993. The text was completed from her notes by her close friends, and the book was published in 1994.
