John Sinclair Freedom Rally Poster (signed)
John Sinclair Freedom Rally 1971 Original Poster – Signed by John Sinclair & Gary Grimshaw (Condition: Good / Damaged)
An original 1971 first printing poster for the historic John Sinclair Freedom Rally, held on December 10, 1971, at the Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This historic piece features artwork by legendary Detroit counterculture artist Gary Grimshaw and includes a prominent portrait (taken by Leni Sinclair) of poet and activist John Sinclair. The lineup for the event included John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Stevie Wonder, Bob Seger, Bobby Seale, and Allen Ginsberg.
This copy was dual-signed in person at Book Beat by both John Sinclair and Gary Grimshaw in silver metallic pen. It features the authenticating distributor text along the lower edge: “Distributed by, L’Imagerie, Sherman Oaks CA”.
Condition Notes
This specific copy was subject to water exposure during a bookstore flood, resulting in a distinct brown tideline stain across the lower portion of the reverse side and subsequent horizontal paper waving and wrinkling along the bottom edge. The front face of the poster retains its vivid neon pink, purple, and yellow coloration, and the metallic silver signatures remain clear and unaffected. This is an authentic, handled historical document offered at a reduced price reflecting its structural flaws. It is highly suitable for framing under a mat to conceal the lower edge rippling.
Biographical Profiles
John Sinclair (1941–2024) was a Detroit and Ann Arbor-area poet, political activist, avant-garde music critic, and manager of the proto-punk band MC5. As a co-founder of the White Panther Party, Sinclair was a prominent figure in the New Left and counterculture movements of the 1960s and 1970s. His 1969 arrest and subsequent ten-year prison sentence for the possession of two marijuana joints became a national cause célèbre, culminating in the 1971 Freedom Rally and his release three days later.
Gary Grimshaw (1946–2014) was a celebrated American graphic artist radicalized by the Detroit counterculture movement. Grimshaw served as the primary poster artist for the Grande Ballroom in Detroit and the psychedelic music scene of the late 1960s and 1970s. His distinctive style—characterized by vibrant fluid lettering, dense psychedelic patterns, and striking political imagery—defined the visual aesthetic of the Detroit and Ann Arbor underground rock and anti-war movements.
