Jaromír Funke (1896–1945) was a towering figure of the European avant-garde and one of the most influential Czech photographers of the 20th century. A master of Modernism, he rejected traditional “pictorial” styles in favor of a radical approach that used light, shadow, and glass objects to create abstract, almost architectural compositions. Throughout his career, he seamlessly blended elements of Cubism, Constructivism, and Surrealism, moving from pure abstraction to socially conscious documentary work. As a dedicated theorist and educator, Funke helped define the “New Objectivity” in photography, leaving behind a legacy of experimentation that fundamentally changed how the camera was used to see and interpret the modern world.
