About the Edition and the Press
Published in the winter of 1982, Echoes captures Robert Creeley exploring the personal and public resonances of aging with his characteristically concise, rhythmic style. This deluxe hardcover issue was beautifully designed, handset, and printed via letterpress by Allan and Cinda Kornblum at The Toothpaste Press in West Branch, Iowa. Operating out of a historic pressroom inherited from legendary printer Harry Duncan, The Toothpaste Press was renowned for making fine letterpress poetry accessible to true literary enthusiasts rather than just wealthy collectors.
This deluxe format features exquisite, unique hand-marbled endpapers that visually frame Creeley’s text. As copy #1 of the 200 copies personally signed and numbered by the poet, this specific volume holds a premier position for institutional collections and serious investors in modern American poetry.
About Robert Creeley (1926–2005)
Robert Creeley was a pivotal figure in 20th-century American avant-garde literature. As a founder of the Black Mountain movement of the 1950s and editor of the influential Black Mountain Review, Creeley rejected rigid traditional history and classical forms in favor of an immediate, breathing aesthetic where “form is never more than an extension of content.” Over a prolific career spanning more than sixty books, his parsimonious diction, intense enjambment, and profound focus on the emotional weight of daily human relationships earned him the Shelley Memorial Award, the Frost Medal, and the role of New York State Poet Laureate.
