Ancient Monuments by Stig Claesson
Stig Claesson — Ancient Monuments (1980, First English Edition)
A very fine copy of the scarce first English translation of Stig Claesson’s celebrated 1968 Swedish masterpiece, Vem älskar Yngve Frej?. Published by the specialized Scottish imprint Thule Press in 1980 as an entry in the UNESCO Collection of Representative Works, this edition brought Claesson’s poignant social satire to the English-speaking world via translator Irene Scobbie.
Set against the backdrop of late-1960s rural depopulation, the novel follows a dwindling village community in remote Sweden. To attract passing urban tourists and offset their mounting isolation, the aging residents jokingly erect an “Ancient Monument” road sign pointing to a mundane old cottage ruin, triggering an influx of curious city visitors. The narrative elegantly balances a dry, satirical humor with a melancholic reflection on mid-century sociological shifts, city-country friction, and a vanishing agrarian lifestyle.
