Joel Shipley—better known in the underground scene by his moniker “King Furry Couch”—is a tattoo artist and independent creator who gained recognition in the DIY community for publishing the mail-art zine The Quiet Sheet. Operating out of Cleveland, Ohio, Shipley captured the chaotic, eclectic spirit of the late 20th-century underground publishing boom.
True to the ethos of the era, this item was originally acquired via the network’s traditional “zine-for-zine” trade economy, exchanging hands directly with contemporaries in the Michigan/Midwest punk and anti-art scenes. This specific packet represents Issue #3 of the brief 1982–1984 run and is individually hand-numbered as copy #32 of 100. It survives completely intact with all its loose-leaf, multi-media, and interactive network inserts.
