Product Description
An absolute time capsule of 1980s Japanese pop-culture mania! This is a flawless copy of Namennayo Cats, the incredibly scarce English-language edition published for the Australian market.
Originally created by photographer Satoru Tsuda, the Nameneko (“Don’t Look Down on Me!”) phenomenon took Japan by storm in 1981. This legendary photo book features real cats meticulously dressed up in miniature, highly detailed outfits to resemble bōsōzoku (Japanese biker gangs) and high school delinquents (tsuppari), complete with tiny motorcycles, leather jackets, and school uniforms.
While millions of copies circulated in Japan, this English translation—credited to Non Kitamura and co-published by Sydney’s Jonathan Music—saw a highly localized distribution. Finding any copy outside of Japan is difficult; finding one in unread, pristine condition is an extreme rarity. A must-have centerpiece for collectors of vintage photography, weird kitsch, and Showa-era pop culture.
