New Wavy Gravy #1; signed Raymond Pettibon

“Incorporating Hard Rock, Acid Rock, Punk Rock, Folk Rock, Country Rock, Soft Rock, Polka Rock, and Raga Rock.” Artist Ray Pettibon and writer Nelson Tarpenny target various music scenes in this offset litho-printed zine published by SoCal punk record label SST. It features Pettibon’s trademark brushy ink drawings of shaved-headed Black Flag fans, as well as a portrait of “Elvis before he got fat and before he died,” a cover parody of Milton Glaser’s famous Bob Dylan silhouette, and other drawings. Also featured: scratchy, child-like sketches of rockers, beatniks and gun-toting lunatics; advice for wannabe groupies on how to bag a “star,” clipped out of some book; typewritten tales of troubled teens, a mock “interview” with a rock groupie, philosophical musings by various pseudonyms, and other stuff. Naturally, the vibe is aggressive, mocking, and irreverent.[pb10]

First edition, SST, March 1985, dimensions: 8.5 x 5.5 inches (22 x 14 cm), boldly signed on the front cover “Raymond Pettibon” in black ink on the cover, fine copy, offset lithograph, 28pp, saddle-stitch staple binding. Acquired directly by the current owner in the late 1970s via a direct trade of Destroy All Monsters zines. Numbered in Red Ink 132 from an edition of 500, though the artist famously destroyed a vast majority of the original unsold stock
