My purpose was to study the life and work of Emily Dickinson.<\/p>\n<p>As \u201cTeacher-Scholars,\u201d K-12 teachers in the program were required to find an academic mentor to guide their work, and I was lucky to enlist the services of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.modernamericanpoetry.org\/content\/jane-donahue-eberwein-emily-dickinsons-life\">Dr. Jane Eberwein<\/a>, Professor of English at Oakland University. Dr. Eberwein has written numerous books and articles on Dickinson and was one of the founders of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emilydickinsoninternationalsociety.org\/\">Emily Dickinson International Society<\/a>, which has grown from a handful of scholars in 1988 to a large international organization with a journal, newsletter, hundreds of chapters, and an annual conference held in the US or abroad.<\/p>\n<p>As she was editing <em>An Emily Dickinson Encyclopedia <\/em>(Greenwood Press, 1993) at the time, Jane kindly invited me to write entries on three topics: \u201cScience as Subject\u201d; \u201cIsolation as Subject\u201d; and Dickinson\u2019s poem (F95) beginning \u201cFlowers\u2014Well\u2014if anybody\/Can the ecstasy explain\u2014\u201d which was one of the handful of poems published during her lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>Back from sabbatical, I brought Dickinson into classrooms and workshops with students and published an essay about this work, \u201cMixing It Up With Dickinson,\u201d which appeared in 2001 in <em>The Teachers &amp; Writers Guide to Classic American Literature<\/em>. My poems \u201cEmily\u2019s Bee\u201d and \u201cAmherst: Her Grave in Autumn\u201d first appeared in <em>Poet Lore<\/em>. \u201cTeaching with Emily One Morning in Spring\u201d was published by <em>English Journal<\/em>, and all three were included in my second poetry collection, <em>Escape Artist<\/em>, which won the John Ciardi Prize from BkMk Press in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to <a href=\"https:\/\/insideoutdetroit.org\/\">InsideOut<\/a> in 2010-2011 when we sponsored a federally funded citywide \u201cBig Read\u201d that brought dozens of Dickinson-themed activities to Detroit classrooms and community venues. The year featured a community reading and a student performance at the DIA, a multi-media workshop with students at the Carr Center, a lecture that Ed Hirsch and I gave at the Detroit Public Library, a Dickinson birthday party at CCS, teacher workshops and many student activities. John Wood\u2019s students at Detroit School of Arts created a film based on Dickinson\u2019s Poem 1788, &#8220;Fame is a Bee&#8221;, and we presented that film during a panel presentation on bringing Dickinson to students at the National Council of Teachers of English Annual Conference in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>A special highlight from that year was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/solidarity-us.org\/atc\/154\/p3365\/\">Blair\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> Dickinson-inspired performance in the Rivera Court in January 2011 just a few months before he died. His setting of \u201cTie the Strings to my Life, My Lord\u201d (P 279) was part of a song cycle I had commissioned for the project. Blair had not read her previously and, as happens with most of us, she -\u2014to paraphrase Dickinson\u2019s own words about how poetry affected her\u2014\u201ctook the top of his head off.\u201d We didn\u2019t get to record all of the songs, but fortunately we have this treasure featured on the blog Brain Pickings: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/2015\/08\/04\/blair-emily-dickinson-farewell\/\">Blair Sets Emily Dickinson\u2019s \u201cFarewell\u201d to Song Shortly Before His Death<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 2015 I retired after 20 years as iO\u2019s founding director and moved to Connecticut a year later to be with my son and family. Being in Connecticut allows me easy access to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emilydickinsonmuseum.org\/\">Dickinson Homestead<\/a> in Amherst, Massachusetts, which houses her museum where I\u2019ve driven frequently for poetry programs. The turn-off toward Amherst onto Highway 9 from US 91 always fills me with a sense of peace. The resulting poem \u201cIn Her Chamber\u201d and another Dickinson inspired poem \u201cNoon in a Corner Caf\u00e9: the Sign\u201d appeared on line at Interim: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interimpoetics.org\/35-3\/terry-blackhawk\/\">Poetry and Poetics<\/a> [bottom of page].
