Rage to Hollywood Stage, a Chicana Punk Story<\/em><\/strong>.<strong><em>Violence Gir<\/em><\/strong>l details her rise from an East LA barrio to punk figurehead as a member of the groundbreaking group <strong>The Bags<\/strong>, to her current role as a mother, author, and punk feminist. They <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">took <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">the band&#8217;s name and their <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">stage <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">names <strong>&#8220;Alice Bag&#8221;<\/strong> and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">&#8220;Pat <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">Bag&#8221; from a gimmick that <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">band used during early <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">performances where they would <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">perform with grocery bags over <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">their heads. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>Alice Bag<\/strong> was the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">vocalist and Pat Bag played <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">bass. The band was rounded <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">out by guitar players Craig Lee <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">and Rob Ritter, and Terry <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">Graham played drums.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>The Bags<\/strong> played their first show <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">at The Masque on September <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">10, 1977. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">By 1979, they had released their <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">first record, a single called <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">&#8220;Survive&#8221;, backed with <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">&#8220;Babylonian Gorgon&#8221;, released <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">by independent record label <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">Dangerhouse Records. &#8220;We <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">Don&#8217;t Need The English&#8221; was <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">included on the Yes L.A. punk <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">compilation released by the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">same label.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">After this, Pat left the band. In <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">1980 the group, minus Pat, was <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">filmed by Penelope Spheeris for <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">the seminal punk rock <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">documentary film, The Decline <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">of Western Civilization, which <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">also featured The Germs, Black <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">Flag, Catholic Discipline, X and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">other prominent L.A. punk <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">bands. However, at the release <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">of the film in 1981 the producers <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">billed the group as Alice Bag <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">Band to avoid any conflict with<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">ex-member Pat. By then, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">however, the band had broken <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>Alice Bag<\/strong> went on to join <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">Castration Squad, which <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">included Phranc and Dinah <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">Cancer among its many <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">members. In the 1990<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">&#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">s she <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">would form Cholita! with punk <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">rock drag queen Vaginal Davis <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">and the band released several<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;\">videos.
