Friday, October 26th; Photographer’s Dirk Baaker & Michael Hodges

Two recent publications from Wayne State University press will be presented at Book Beat on Friday, October 26th from 7-8 PM. Photographer Dirk Bakker will present Detroit’s Historic Places of Worship and author/photographer Michael Hodges will present Michigan’s Historic Railroad Stations. Both books are lavishly illustrated hardcovers priced at $39.95, suitable for holiday gift-giving.

Magical Mel’s Magic Book Emporium

Mel Eisenberg (1935-2012) was a well known Detroit area magician. Beginning in the last week of October and throughout December 2012, Book Beat will be selling and displaying Mel’s specialized collection of magic books and ephemera in our backroom gallery. Included in the sale will be a large grouping of books related to the circus; sideshow entertainers, freaks, P.T. Barnum, posters, magazines, photo stills and biographies of magicians (many of them signed) and over 40 rare and seldom seen tarot and cartomancy decks. Mel’s private library represents a lifetime of passionate collecting. Reading Group meeting Monday, October 29th

The next reading group meeting will be on Monday October 29th at 7:00 p.m. at the Goldfish Tea House in Royal Oak. Our book discussion will be on Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House.

Sunday, November 11th; Local Rock Legend Dick Wagner at Book Beat

Legendary musician and newly-turned author,Dick Wagner will be stopping by the Book Beat (26070 Greenfield Rd. Oak Park, MI) onSunday, November 11 from 2-4pm to promote the release of his memoir, Not Only Women Bleed. Dick will be signing as well as performing some songs.
