WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29th, Reading Group Meeting:
Book Beat reading group will meet to discuss MISTRESS ORIKU: STORIES FROM A TOKYO TEAHOUSE by Matsutaro Kawaguchi at Gayles Chocolates in Royal Oak at 7 PM Wed., Aug., 29.
Set in Meiji-era Japan, this is the story of the sensitive, compassionate and indomitable Mistress Oriku. Formerly involved in the pleasure trades of Tokyo, Mistress Oriku leaves that life behind to run an elegant teahouse on the city’s outskirts. But despite her hopes for a quieter, less hectic life, she finds she can’t escape her involvement in the city’s creative, intellectual and political circles.
Meetings of the Book Beat reading group are free and open to the general public. We usually meet the last Wednesday of the month at Gayles Chocolates to discuss books with an emphasis on world lit. Reading club books are discounted 15% if purchased from our store.
