Orbit Magazine Anthology with Rob St. Mary, Thurs., Sept. 10

Hear stories of punk rock excess & success outlining the creation of the magazines (White Noise, Fun and Orbit) as well as the lasting impact of these innovative Detroit publications… AND MORE! Special guests are expected – so, maybe sure you show up, buy a copy of the book, get it signed as we start the 25th birthday celebrations for Orby! This event is free and open to the public. Fifth Estate 50th Anniversary, Thurs., Sept. 10!

fe-394-1-coverJoin us at the MOCAD Mobile Homestead on Thursday, September 10 from 5:00-7:00pm for the opening of You Can’t Print That!: 50 Years of the Fifth Estate. The exhibit features a reconstruction of the magazines 1960s office with pre-computer printing technology, posters (rock and roll and anti-war), art, and the FE button and bumper sticker shop, featuring posters, books, buttons, and more. The exhibit runs to January 3, 2016. Open Friday-Sunday, 11am-5pm. Free. There is an entire roster of events planned for their anniversary, so check out the schedule on the Fifth Estate website here. Michigan Reads! Author Laurie Keller, Sept. 17th & 18th!

16059320Michigan Reads! author Laurie Keller will be in town on Thursday, September 17th and Friday, 18th and Book Beat is happy to be supplying books at her events. On Thursday, 17th, Laurie Keller will visit Roosevelt Primary where she’ll treat students to her presentation. Later that evening from 6:30-7:30pm, Ferndale Area District Library (222 E. Nine Mile Rd., Ferndale, MI 48220) will host Keller at an evening program catered to preschool age children and their families. On Friday, 18th, she will visit the Farmington Public Library (23500 Liberty St, Farmington, MI 48335) at 6:30pm where she will read from her work and discuss her career as an author and illustrator. Authors Susan Crandall & Mardi Link at Berkley Library, Tues., Oct 13

16058610Authors Susan Crandall and Mardi Link will be at the Berkley Public Library (3155 51WEcVvkF0L._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_Coolidge Hwy, Berkley, MI 48072) on Tuesday, October 13 at 6:30pm to speak and sign copies of their work. Susan Crandall will be appearing in support of her most recent release, Whistling Past the Graveyard, while Mardi Link will present her latest book, The Drummond Girls: A Story of Fierce Friendship Beyond Time and Chance. Reading Groups are sure to love these two authors and their inspiring and moving new books. This event is sponsored by the Detroit chapter of the Women’s National Book Association and the Berkley Public Library.
