Patty Duke at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, Thurs., May 8!

patty-duke_lead_t614Academy Award winning actress and author Patty Duke will be appearing at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, (27375 Bell Road, Southfield, MI) on Thursday, May 8 at 7pm as part of the Healthy Body Healthy Mind program sponsored by Kadima. An afterglow and book signing will immediately follow at 7:30pm. Tickets are $50. Early reservations are recommended. You can register online here. Books on the Lake, May 9-10, with Dennis Lehane & Gloria Whelan!

Authors and guests will mingle while enjoying heavy hors d’oeuvres and an open bar. The authors will be available for book signing while dessert is served.

You are welcome to bring your own books for signing; books will also be available for purchase courtesy of Book Beat.

Dress is business or cocktail attire, denim is not permitted. Complimentary valet parking is provided.

Author Reception Tickets are $100 and available at Central Library

On Saturday, May 10, Dennis Lehane, Gloria Whelan, and Rhoda Janzen will share the stage from 11:30am-3:00pm to discuss their respective work at the author luncheon at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. The authors will conduct a reading, answer questions, and there will be a book signing at the conclusion of the afternoon.

You are welcome to bring your own books for signing; books will also be available for purchase courtesy of Book Beat. Tickets are $35.

Author Sharon Flake, May 13 & 14 at Detroit Public Library!

If you cannot make either event, she will also be presenting at the Main Branch on Wednesday, May 14 at 10am. These events are free and open to the public. Musician & Author Josh Malerman at New Way Bar, Tues.,May 13!

Josh is a Detroit native and frontman for the band The High Strung, who will also be performing at this unique book signing/ reading/ concert. This event is free and open to the public. Indies First Storytime Day is Sat., May 17th!

storytimeWWOn Saturday May 17th from 11:00am-5:00 PM, Book Beat will be participating in a nation-wide event sponsored by the American Booksellers Association – Indies First Storytime Day.” The Book Beat is located at 26010 Greenfield in Oak Park. Please call 248-968-1190 for more information. 

This event is the inspiration of children’s author, Kate DiCamillo, who is the current National Ambassador of Young People’s Literature for the United States. She’s also a two-time Newbery winner for The Tale of Desperaux and 2014?s Flora & Ulysses.  

In celebration of Children’s Book Week, authors have been asked to visit local independent bookstores and read from their favorite children’s books.

This celebration will be held Thursday, May 22 at 7 p.m., at the Rust Belt Market in Ferndale (22801 Woodward Ave, Ferndale MI 48220). This event will feature Annie’s Ghosts author Steve Luxenberg and complimentary food and drinks. There is no cost to attend but we are requesting advance RSVP for catering purposes. The Sights’ Eddie Baraneck at Royal Oak Library, Sat., May 31!

Digital External_Cover_Layout.xlsThe Sights front-man turned author Eddie Baraneck will be performing and signing copies of his newly-released book, Taken Alive: The Sight’s Rock and Roll Tour Diary at the Royal Oak Public Library (222 E 11 Mile Rd, Royal Oak, MI 48067) on Saturday, May 31 from 2:00-3:00pm. Eddie will play guitar, sing, and read from the diary, and bring stories from the road. Join us for a fun and engaging afternoon, as we hear what life’s like on the road for a Detroit rock and roller.

 

May Reading Group Selection: Iraqi Nights

iraqiBook Beat’s Reading Group selection for May is The Iraqi Nights by Dunya Mikhail. The Reading Group will be joined by poet Dunya Mikhail on Wednesday, May 28th at 6pm in Book Beat (26010 Greenfield Rd. Oak Park, MI 48237).
